providing technical guidelines for the sheet metal industry and promoting expertise of our members
Recent announcements regarding changes to the National Pension Fund (NPF) Alternative Schedule have stimulated discussion and generated numerous questions from SMACNA members regarding the NPF and local multi-employer pension funds. To be responsive to member concerns and inquiries, SMACNA is hosting a Webinar on May 18, 2009 addressing the NPF funding status and providing the most up to date information on what these changes mean to contributing contractors and those areas currently negotiating contracts.

During the Webinar, SMACNA outside counsel Steve Burton and William Ecklund, from the firm Felhaber Larson Fenlon & Vogt, will explain how the recent changes affect collective bargaining agreements and what options are available to contractors faced with the increased schedule. In addition, SMACNA has arranged for a Plan trustee, independent actuary and Labor Relations Staff to be on-hand to address questions regarding the Plan's funding status as well as future projections on the Plan's health. SMACNA members may also raise similar questions related to their local pension funds.

The Webinar will address questions previously directed to SMACNA, including:
  • Did the Plan cut every benefit it could before raising contribution levels under the Alternative Schedule?
  • Why can't the trustees just cut benefits to make Plan healthier?
  • Is there any cap on what contractors have to pay under Default/Alternative Schedule?
  • If our area chose Alternative Schedule, can we switch to Default Schedule?
  • What happens if collective bargaining negotiations deadlock and we can't agree on pension funding?
  • SMACNA Members and SMACNA Chapter Executives
